Why do printer manufacturers charge ridiculous amounts for ink?

When it is cheaper to buy a new printer WITH the ink included?! I understand its how they make their money, and the sometimes sell printers at a loss, but isn't this a stupid practice? Isnt it urging people to buy new printers, and waste perfectly good machines? Why do printer manufacturers charge ridiculous amounts for ink?
1) Because most people are stupid and dont work out the math. A number of companies give away ';free'; printers with their computer because the ink is $40 a cartridge, yet these foolish people continuing paying $40 a cartridge rather than switch printers. I even met people who thought they HAD to use a Dell printer with a Dell computer.

2) Because a stupid American judge ruled that Epson is allowed to program their printers to refuse to accept compatibles. It set a precedent for the other companies. Ever since then, cartridge price for ALL inkjets has gone up and the amount of ink included has gone down. You are now paying over $5,000 a gallon for ink. (Figure it out at $20 per 12 ml) Fortunately, Epson hasn't found similar stupid judges in other countries so there are still some companies making compatibles which work. Try http://ccs-digital.com/ink.asp for Epson compatibles which work and sell from $2 to $5.Why do printer manufacturers charge ridiculous amounts for ink?
They do it because most people aren't interested in buying the new machine, or don't realize that its cheaper. They are also able to get away with it, so that's what they do. It started back in the early days when people were only able to afford printers when they were sold at a loss.
Probably, because you have an ink jet printer. The printer it self is cheap but cartridges cost lots of money if you print a lot the best way to use laser printer. It will cost less for every print out.
most printer manufactures sell ink they are not interested in the printer.

One of the Mags did a bit on ink last year as said that ink worked out at 拢133 a liter

In the uk it is better to pay a lot for the printer as you get cheaper ink.

The last new printer I bought was 拢200 but the cartridges are only 拢2.99 each
As head of one of the largest manufacturers in the world ! NOT! i can tell you why i one sentence.. not in any order.!!+ ...my wifes alimony..my new shiny lear jet..my..3 girls who think money grows on trees in the back yard......ok i know i don,t need all the toys i got but ,,hey its the good life oh got off track here sorry,,,first off we only make 300 percent mark up,then the store just makes 100 percent mark up so as you can see the printers an,t realy free ..kind of like selling you flash light ...were do you go when you need more batt ? haha as far as throwing out printers we don.t you do
You are correct -- it's a stupid practice. It's inefficient and certainly bad for the environment. They do it for one reason - to maximize their profits. It's as simple as that. The repeat purchasing of ink cartridges has far greater bottom line implications than the sale of printers.
